Home fires are the most common disaster affecting families in southern Nevada . In our community a family loses their home and belongings to fire almost every day, often barely escaping with their lives and the clothes on their backs. Donate

Imagine suddenly being without your possessions, precious family photographs or heirlooms. These can never be replaced.

But in the immediate aftermath of a fire, more practical concerns arise. Where will you sleep and eat if your house or apartment has been destroyed? Will you be able to get dressed and go to work? Where will your children get the things they need to return to school? Where will you get the prescription medication that has been lost? How will you replace important documents? At the end of the day, how will you quiet your children’s fears? The Red Cross responds to these immediate needs and universal concerns every day.

The Southern Nevada Chapter of the American Red Cross responds to a local disaster every 24 hours, day and night. Even at 3:00 a.m., there are volunteers who stand ready to go wherever they are needed, at a moment’s notice. While all this disaster assistance is provided by volunteers, the help they give costs money.

The average southern Nevada family who is displaced receives $530 in emergency assistance, for a total of nearly $300,000 a year.

The Red Cross helps anyone in need, with no strings attached. This is not long-term assistance, but emergency aid and support in the first couple days after a disaster, so that people can get back on their feet. Since all assistance provided by the Red Cross is an outright gift, it is made possible entirely by voluntary contributions from caring donors.

In order to insure that the Red Cross can be there for all the families that will need help this year, we are raising $150,000 – and public awareness - through our Fire Hurts…Red Cross Helps campaign.
